Introduction

With Twingo Z.E., Renault’s iconic small city car now has an all-electric engine to offer even greater driving pleasure and comfort in everyday life. With its bubbly personality, this fun and easygoing car reaches its full potential in its favourite playground. By going all-electric, Twingo is more than ever the queen of the city!

Since its first appearance in 1992, Twingo has constantly reinvented itself in line with changing uses and needs. After three generations and almost four million cars sold in 25 countries, Twingo has broken new ground with the launch of its all-electric version, Twingo Z.E.

Renault has leveraged its extensive knowledge of the small city car segment to develop an electric car whose driveability, operating range and features are perfectly suited to the needs of city drivers. Built on a platform designed for electric cars, Twingo Z.E. offers performance and pleasure which magnify the factors that have already made Twingo such a success.

Twingo Z.E. takes Twingo’s fun design, attractive personality and exclusive customisation possibilities and enhances them with features that underline its electric character.

Where driving pleasure and convenience are concerned, Twingo Z.E., just like its internal combustion counterpart, has the industry’s best-in-class turning radius. Its electric rear-wheel drive and different driving modes make it even more fun and enjoyable to drive. With its 22 kWh battery, Twingo Z.E. can zip around the city for a whole week on a single battery charge. Its versatile charging system allows it to charge up to four times faster than its competitors at the charging stations most commonly found in public areas.

And it makes an even better everyday companion, with its compact size, outstanding roominess and modularity. New connected services make life easier for drivers across the entire Twingo line and, on Twingo Z.E., include all the features specific to Renault’s electric vehicles.

“Twingo Z.E. is not only tailored to everyday uses but also designed to support urban transformation. It’s the most Twingo of the Twingos!”, Stéphane Wiscart, Twingo Deputy Programme Director.

The result of double expertise

Today, Renault is the only major player on the small city car market to have significant expertise in electric cars. A real “super city car”, Twingo Z.E. is the combination of these two sets of expertise.

Twingo Z.E. is Renault’s response to changing demand in the small city car segment, where drivers are looking for practical, fuel-efficient and environment-friendly cars. In an urban context, electric vehicles are the obvious ideal solution for daily commutes.

Twingo Z.E. builds on the iconic status and popularity of Twingo, a long-standing leader in the A-segment on the French market and the fourth best-selling mini city car in Europe.

Twingo Z.E. is also the seventh all-electric vehicle developed by Renault, since the Group already has the ZOE model, the Twizy quadricycle and the Kangoo Z.E. and Master Z.E. vans, as well as the RSM SM3 Z.E. saloon, sold in South Korea, and the Renault City K-ZE small SUV, sold in China. As a super city car, Twingo Z.E. is positioned in a niche complementary to that of New ZOE, the European B-segment.

Twingo Z.E. is built on a platform originally designed for electric cars, thus taking advantage of all the electric-vehicle expertise acquired by Groupe Renault over the past ten years.

Its 22 kWh battery boasts latest-generation lithium-ion cells developed in partnership with LG Chem. It has been fitted into the car so as not to alter either the overall roominess or the volume of the boot. Thermal management is provided by a water-cooling system, a first in the Renault Z.E. range. Paired with a Caméléon® charger developed by Groupe Renault for ZOE, the Twingo Z.E. battery offers optimised charging across all charging stations in alternative current (AC) up to 22 kW. Its aluminium crash boxes, fully embedded in the battery structure, further strengthen its lateral resistance.

The Twingo Z.E. powertrain (motor, reduction gear and charger) is based on that of New ZOE and manufactured at Cléon in western France, on the production lines that already manufacture other electric engines for Renault and its partners. It gives the mini city car first-class energy efficiency.

The car is assembled at the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia, where all Twingo versions are made, and distributed and serviced through the Renault network. All Renault’s sales and technical teams in Europe have been given training in the specific features of electric vehicles.

Design: As iconic as ever

Exterior character

Launched in the spring of 2019, New Twingo proudly boasts its compact size with a stylish and sassy design. Twingo Z.E. adds a few landmark features specific to the Renault all-electric vehicle family.

Twingo has always cherished its mischievous and endearing look. The current version is no exception. Its sculpted bumper, embellished with air inlets and optical units with the C-shaped LED signature, gives it a vibrant and sassy front end. Bodywork colours, colour packages, stripping and wheels can be combined to give a wealth of customisation options. The Z.E. version adds all-electric design features.

Electric blue edging

Blue edging highlights the centre of the wheels. It is part of the trims, from the first trim level (Life), and embellishes the various wheel options offered at higher levels.

Rear badge

Located on the rear tailgate, the “Z.E. Electric” badge recalls the car’s all-electric aspect.

Side badge

The “Z.E. Electric” signature is also featured on the centre post (B-pillar) which separates the side doors.

Side edging

Twingo Z.E.’s side stripping boasts blue edging from the Intens trim level, running the full length of the car to enhance its shape. The driver can choose to replace it with a personalised animation.

Front-end edging

The horizontal patterns which highlight the front end also feature the electric blue signature from the Intens trim level.

Charging socket

The charging socket (Type 2 format suitable for connecting to charging stations) is fitted where the fuel filler flap used to be located.

Interior character

Still as roomy and functional as ever, the passenger compartment retains all the customisation options offered on the range. The “Z.E.” logo recalls the all-electric aspect of Twingo Z.E. The 7-inch colour touch screen, unique in the segment, offers access to Twingo’s new connectivity features.

From the Zen trim level, Twingo Z.E. offers drivers a choice of interior ambience from a selection of several customisation packages that define the colour of the dashboard strip, the air-vents contours and the steering wheel spokes, as well as the colour of the upholstery weave. The centre console offers a large amount of storage space and a central 7-inch touch screen available from the second trim level (Zen).

Gear lever

The lever for selecting the various electric motor drive modes is decorated with a Z.E. logo, engraved under the knob.

Door sills

The Z.E. look is also featured on the front door sills from the Zen trim level, using a pattern inspired by the strip proposed on the outer body.

Renault EASY LINK multimedia system

From the Zen trim level, drivers can access all Renault EASY CONNECT connected services from the Renault EASY LINK 7-inch HD touch screen, integrated into the centre console. They can also access all these services from the MY Renault smartphone app. On Twingo Z.E., this connected environment has been enhanced with features specific to electric vehicles.

Driving pleasure: even more fun

Already highly popular for its driveability and turning radius, Twingo Z.E. gives you an even more energised driving experience and is more fun to drive. Its operating range and flexibility guarantee driver’s real freedom of movement.

Driving experience

Twingo has always aimed to make city driving fun. For instance, the internal combustion version is the only small city car on the market to offer automatic EDC six-speed transmission. Twingo Z.E. completes this offer with its electrifyingly responsive engine and the introduction of new specific driving modes.

Driveability

Twingo Z.E.’s highly responsive electric engine further emphasizes the car’s fun and dynamic character. Its compact size (3.61 metres long) and wheels located at the four corners increase its agility. Just like its internal combustion counterpart, Twingo Z.E. with its rear-mounted engine still provides the best-in-class turning radius: only 4.30 metres are required to make a U-turn.

Engine

Twingo Z.E.’s 60 kW (82 hp) engine immediately provides an available maximum torque of 160 Nm*. Drivers get strong and silent acceleration and pick-up even at low revs. The engine can reach 50 km/h (31 mph) in barely four seconds*. While the 135 km/h (84 mph) top speed permits all motorway travel*.

Driving modes

Twingo Z.E features a “B mode” giving drivers a choice of three levels for the regenerative braking function as soon as they release the accelerator pedal. In the most advanced configuration, the car decelerates significantly, which quickly regenerates the battery, reduces the need for braking and makes city driving easier. In contrast, the most continuous mode allows the vehicle to keep going almost as if it was in freewheel mode.

Freedom of movement

Driving pleasure also means peace of mind. Twingo Z.E. can manage a week of city driving without recharging. It is also best-in-class for taking advantage of a stop to use the charging facilities most commonly found in public places.

Operating range

With its 22 kWh battery, Twingo Z.E. has a range of around 250 kilometres (143 miles) in WLTP City cycle and 180 kilometres (102 miles) in Full WLTP cycle**. Given that the average daily commute for mini city car users in Europe is around 30 kilometres (19 miles), the operating range is sufficient for a week’s commuting without charging, making it the perfect electric city car alternative to internal combustion versions.

The “Eco” mode, activated by pushing a button on the centre console, offers an operating range of around 215 kilometers (125 miles) on mixed journeys, by limiting acceleration and top speed on motorways.

Flexible charging system

With its smart Caméléon® charger patented by Renault, Twingo Z.E. can be charged at home, at work or using alternating current (AC) power infrastructure up to 22 kW. The technology enables it to adapt to the power available at each charging station and make full use of existing facilities, especially in cities. As a result, Twingo Z.E. benefits from optimum charging time whatever the charging station. It charges up to four times faster than its competitors at those most commonly found in public areas. Connection to a 22-kW charging station for just thirty minutes increases Twingo Z.E.’s operating range by around 80 kilometres (50 miles) for mixed journeys.

** Data pending approval. WLTP = Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedures. The WLTP City cycle corresponds to the urban part of the standard cycle. The Full WLTP cycle corresponds to the standard cycle, with 57% of city journeys, 25% of suburban journeys and 18% of motorway journeys.

Convenience: an even better companion

Twingo is going electric without changing its roominess and modularity. Twingo Z.E. was designed with the idea that small city cars can make life easier for drivers. Its features and connected functions, based on New ZOE, meet all needs in an intuitive way to ensure even greater practicality and comfort.

Ease in daily life

Small on the outside but big on the inside! Built on a platform designed to suit electric cars, Twingo Z.E. still has all the practical advantages of its internal combustion counterpart.

Z.E. Voice

Silence inside but easily heard outside: Twingo Z.E. has opted for the New ZOE “Z.E. Voice” system for optimum pedestrian safety. Drivers can choose between three sound schemes, whose intensity varies according to speed. They are disabled above 30 km/h (19 mph), when tyre noise or air movement are enough to indicate the car’s presence.

Roominess and modularity

Built on a platform designed to suit electric cars, Twingo Z.E. still has all the roominess of its internal combustion counterpart. With five doors, a flat floor and a fully foldable passenger seat, it provides, for instance, a 2.31-metre loading length. The size of the boot, closed by a handled tailgate, also remains the same, i.e. 240 litres. Twingo Z.E. offers a centre console equipped with spaces and charging sockets suited for smartphones, as well as a closed glove compartment from the first trim level (Life).

Seamless connectivity

Whatever the engine type, Twingo features connected services to make the driver’s life easier, accessible via the instrument panel onboard and from the driver’s smartphone outside the vehicle. On Twingo Z.E., they have been enhanced with features that make driving an electric vehicle even more intuitive.

Renault EASY CONNECT for all engine types

The whole Twingo line now benefits from the Renault EASY CONNECT service for connected mobility, both inside and outside the vehicle.

The Zen and Intens trim versions give access to Renault’s EASY LINK onboard multimedia system, displayed on a 7-inch HD touch screen on the centre console, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Onboard connected services include real-time sat nav, Google Search for intuitive and relevant web searches, and the Auto-update service for automatic and regular updates of all features and services.

Twingo also offers the MY Renault mobile app for continuous connectivity outside the vehicle. Drivers can send their itinerary directly from their smartphone, continue it on foot after parking in the city and use the Find My Car option to easily find their car.

Z.E. connected services

Twingo Z.E. adds services to the general EASY CONNECT library that have been specifically created by Renault to support electric-vehicle use. Similar to those featured on New ZOE, they confirm Twingo Z.E.’s place among the best-in-class for electric-vehicle connectivity.

With the EASY LINK onboard system, charging time can be scheduled in order to take advantage of off-peak hours. Once on the road, the system displays the car’s range on a map in real time, adds the nearest charging stations on request and updates their availability in real time.

Outside the vehicle, drivers can check the battery level during charging from their MY Renault app and remotely control air conditioning and heating to adjust the temperature of the passenger compartment during charging, without affecting the vehicle’s range. Drivers can also use the “EV Route Planner” feature to simulate a planned route and identify the necessary charging stations on the way.
