Renault 5 voted Readers' Choice in What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2024

  • New all-electric Renault 5 set for launch in 2025
  • Renault Clio awarded the Small Car of the Year crown, winning praise for its handling and value
  • Recently-reinvented Renault Clio available now priced from £17,795 OTR

The forthcoming new Renault 5 has been voted Readers’ Choice in the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2024, while the Renault Clio claimed the title of Best Small Car thanks to its engaging road manners and excellent value for money.

Readers of the long-established magazine and website were asked to vote for the car they were most excited to see in showrooms in 2024 and, from a shortlist of 14 contenders, the all-electric Renault 5 was a run-away winner.

“The Renault 5 already has a What Car? trophy to its name, having won the Readers’ Choice poll at our Electric Car Awards a few months back,” said Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car? “Repeating that feat at our Car of the Year Awards is no small achievement, but in the final tally, the 5 collected almost twice as many votes as our second-place contender.”

The new Renault 5 E-Tech electric, set for launch later this year, takes its styling cues from the original and brings them up to date for a contemporary silhouette. The extended rear wheel arches and daytime running lights – both echoing the sporting look of the Renault 5 Turbo – hint at the new model’s playful side, while a modern approach is evident in the choice of finishes and materials, matched by its all-electric powertrain.

The latest generation Renault Clio, which was revealed last year, drew praise for its responsive steering, large and practical boot space, and excellent value for money, with What Car?’s judges describing the five-door hatchback as “fun to drive” before commenting that “even with all of its great qualities, the Clio beats most rivals on price.”

Offered with a choice of powertrains, including an innovative full hybrid, the new Renault Clio offers bold, fresh styling and a cutting-edge digital experience. The generously-equipped three-model range, crowned by a new range-topping esprit Alpine trim, starts at only £17,795 OTR.

Guillaume Sicard, Country Head UK & Managing Director Renault Brand UK, said: “The new Renault 5 has accumulated an enviable array of awards before even going on sale, such is the anticipation customers have for our latest all-electric model. The Clio, meanwhile, set in motion a long-running love affair that spanned the generations, yet still draws admirers today and, as this award proves, continues to be the benchmark in its highly competitive class.”
