Junior Saloon Car Championship title protagonist Ethan Hammerton (Northallerton) has announced he will contest Renault UK’s exciting new Clio Cup Junior category for 14 to 17-year-old drivers which gets under way at Norfolk’s Snetterton circuit this weekend (Sat 9/Sun 10 September).

Ethan, aged 16, will drive for the JamSport Racing team. He currently lies second in the JSCC standings and could win the title in its final rounds at Brands Hatch later this month (23/24 Sept) but will have to juggle that with his participation in Clio Cup Junior which is appearing at the same event!

Should Ethan go on to win the Clio Cup Junior title his prize will be a free registration into the senior UK Clio Cup which features live on ITV4 alongside the star-studded British Touring car Championship. It’s a prize worth £18,000…

Ethan commented: “I’m very excited about the prospect of racing in Clio Cup Junior. The cars are purpose built for racing which means the performance is fantastic, plus the prize that Renault Sport has put up for the eventual Champion is a really big deal for any young driver.

“Obviously Brands Hatch is going to be pretty busy for me but hopefully I’ll be able to hop from one car to the other without too much trouble.”

Northampton based JamSport won 2016’s senior UK Clio Cup crown with Ant Whorton-Eales who now races in the BTCC.

Team Principal Jamie Going said: “Ethan’s signature is a real coup. It means a three-car line-up for JamSport with Gus Burton and Louis Doyle, two other very exciting young talents, already confirmed with us.”

Renault UK Clio Cup Junior is for drivers aged 14 to 17 in equally matched cars that are near identical to those used in the senior UK Clio Cup. The only changes are a 100mph speed limit, five gears instead of six and the use of road tyres – Michelin’s high performance Pilot Sport 3 – as opposed to racing ‘slicks’.

In addition to the Champion winning a free registration into the senior UK Clio Cup, prizes will be awarded to second and third overall as well as each race winner.

Championship registrations costing just £1600 + VAT can be lodged with Renault Sport’s UK Motorsport Championship Manager Will Fewkes: Tel +44 (0)7894 317477 / Email Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein!

He added: “We very much welcome Ethan onto the Clio Cup Junior grid. He took part in our recent sampler day event with the cars and it was clear he was hooked. Our grid this weekend consists of drivers with a broad range of experiences so it’s anybody’s guess as to who will come out on top!”
