Two more drivers – reigning Fiesta Junior Champion Harry Gooding (Bridgwater) and Junior Saloon Car front-runner TJ Rodriguez (Rayleigh) – will join the Renault UK Clio Cup Junior grid at Brands Hatch this weekend (Sat 23/Sun 24 September).

Harry will race for Team Pyro and commented: “I’m really excited about moving into Clio Cup Junior.

“I’ve sampled the car a few times and it is absolutely fantastic. A lot of drivers at junior level are now talking about Clio Cup Junior for 2018 so to get some experience of the championship before then was an opportunity not to be missed.”

TJ, aged 14, will join JamSport Racing. He said: “Ever since I drove the car at the sampler day in July all I’ve wanted to do is this championship.

“The car is on a totally different level to anything I’ve experienced before and there’s all the professional set-up and experience that Renault Sport bring – I see this as a real step forward in my career.”

Brands Hatch marks the third and fourth rounds of Renault UK Clio Cup Junior – the new championship for 14 to 17 year-old drivers launched at Snetterton, Norfolk a fortnight ago.

The category sets new standards in junior saloon car racing in terms of engineering, performance, reliability and safety. Its young drivers are in cars identical to those used in the Renault UK Clio Cup which races live on ITV4 alongside the British Touring Car Championship.

The only differences are the cars are limited to 100mph, have five gears instead of six (albeit with the same superb Sadev paddle shift system) and are fitted with high performance Michelin Pilot Sport 3 road tyres instead of racing ‘slicks’.

After Brands Hatch this weekend four more rounds remain – at Pembrey, Carmarthenshire (Sat 14/Sun 15 Oct) and at Brands Hatch again (Sat 18/Sun 19 Nov).

The eventual Champion will win a free registration into the senior UK Clio Cup – a prize worth £18,000.

Renault Sport’s UK Motorsport Championship Manager Will Fewkes said: “We very much welcome Harry and TJ to our Clio Cup Junior grid – both add to the very high quality that has already been attracted to it and we look forward to seeing them in action this weekend.”
